Scripture: Philippians 2:12-13
12Therefore, my dear ones, as you have always obeyed [my suggestions], so now, not only [with the enthusiasm you would show] in my presence but much more because I am absent, work out (cultivate, carry out to the goal, and fully complete) your own salvation with reverence and awe and trembling (self-distrust, with serious caution, tenderness of conscience, watchfulness against temptation, timidly shrinking from whatever might offend God and discredit the name of Christ). 13[Not in your own strength] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight.
Paul was writing to the Church of Philppi during his first imprisonment in Rome. This church had started after Paul’s 2nd missionary journey in Macedonia and which was mainly comprised of Gentiles. This was a church that supported the cause of the gospel with people, finances and encouragement where needed. They had sent Paul a gift when they found out he was in prison for the sake of the Gospel to bring him encouragement, and because of their gift Paul wrote this letter to thank, encourage, uplift and challenge them to walk in all God has for them to walk in.
I say all that because it is important to understand the background, so we can get the entirety of the context!!
He encourages the people in the church to ” work out (cultivate, carry out to the goal, and fully complete) your own salvation with reverence and awe and trembling (self-distrust, with serious caution, tenderness of conscience, watchfulness against temptation, timidly shrinking from whatever might offend God and discredit the name of Christ).” I believe Paul was saying that we have responsibility for our own life and our walk with The Lord regarding our salvation. The word salvation means nothing missing and nothing broken. Our entire life have been transformed, as we have been translated out of the kingdom of darkness into His marvelous light. We have become a new creature in Christ, the old things are passed away and all things are become new. The greater one lives on the inside of us, we are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus and we can do all things through Christ who infuses inner strength into us. So when he says that we are to work out our own salvation, we are to continue to develop our confidence In Him and because He is our Lord we are to have reverence for Him not a fear, fear because it is His perfect love that has cast out all fear. In the midst of us walking out and carrying out our salvation, developing who we are in Him, His desires become are desires, His ways become our ways and he forms within us to will and to do according to His good pleasure. We are in Christ, we live, move and have our being in Him and because of this our minds are transformed to His Word and then we are able to walk out His plan!!
In our lives we are responsible for our walk and our relationship with Christ… We are to work out our own salvation … Keep our eyes fixed on Him, the author and finisher of our faith. He is our Lord, so we have awe, respect and reverence towards him. But he is also our Heavenly Father and we can go boldly to His throne room of grace to present our requests to Him in our time of need. Working out our own salvation in growing in confidence in who God says He is and who we are in Him. After this, automatically His desires become our desires, His ways become our ways and His plans become our plans because we are in Him!!!
Father in the mighty name of Jesus I thank you for a greater revelation of these verses… Help us to continue on trusting Your Word…we are who you say we are, we have what you say we have and we can do what your word says we can do! Because we are in you, I thank you that we know your voice and because we know your voice, we listen to your voice! Your will for our lives becomes our will as we keep our eyes fixed on you….You Holy Spirit work within us to will and to do according to Your good pleasure!!!
