Scripture: Ecclesiastes 2:10-11
10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired;
I refused my heart no pleasure.
My heart took delight in all my labor,
and this was the reward for all my toil.
11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
and what I had toiled to achieve,
everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;
nothing was gained under the sun.
I asked one of my best friends a question about their marriage and this is what I asked… “What is one of the best things that you guys have done for your marriage since you have been married?”
She said ” We went on a missions trip together after being married for 6 months. Because of this trip it changed our perspective on life; where we invest our time and where we invest our money.”
This has so stuck with me, because they together were able to have the same perspective regarding of where they were going to invest their time and money, they were on the same page and in unity.
This scripture is about Solomon saying that he had all the riches, all the heart throbs, all the wisdom… all the”…” But really it was all in vain… there was nothing gained. He did not feel fulfilled, there was still a void… all the stuff in life was not enough to satisfy the hunger of the heart.
I think these are some questions we should ask ourselves:
- Why am I doing what I am doing?
- What is my motive behind what I am doing?
- Am I seeking first the kingdom of God and therefore He will add all other things to my life? Or am I adding all other things to my life without seeking first His Kingdom?
- Am I seeing good fruit in my life or am I seeing drought and rotten fruit in my life?
- Is my pursuit in life after the created or the creator?
I think that answering these questions personally with give us a good perspective of where we are in life; What, where, why and who we are in pursuit of….
I challenge us to evaluate these questions and take them to heart… because at the end of every day we have an opportunity to say “today was meaningless, nothing I did was profitable for me or others, or we have an opportunity to say YES… today I made an eternal difference, because as I sought the Lord and delighted in Him He gave me the desires of my heart… he led and guided my steps and therefore I had success and my day was not just chasing the wind…”
Father I ask that you would help us as your children to evaluate our lives…where are we investing or time and our money? Is it just for personal gain or for the Kingdom of God gain… are we investing into eternity or just the here and now? I ask God that you would open the eyes of our hearts and give us revelation light regarding these questions. I for one do not want to end my days saying I was just chasing after the wind and there was nothing gained, but I want to hear “Well done.” I thank you Lord for your love that draws us ever so close, I thank you father that Your love never fails, never gives up or runs dry… God you are more than enough,your strength is enough to help us recognize where we are at to help us get to a place we want to be. I ask that you would give us wisdom, the ability to see each situation through your eyes… to have a Kingdom perspective. I ask these things, and I trust God that because the Holy Spirit is our helper, He will help us, lead us and guide us into all truth as we evaluate these questions. I trust you God. In the name of Jesus. Amen, so be it!
