Scripture: Hebrews 4:10-12

10 For he who has once entered [God’s] rest also has ceased from [the weariness and pain] of human labors, just as God rested from those labors peculiarly His own.

11 Let us therefore be zealous and exert ourselves and strive diligently to enter that rest [of God, to know and experience it for ourselves], that no one may fall or perish by the same kind of unbelief and disobedience [into which those in the wilderness fell].

12 For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.

What is rest? Do we as a people truly ever rest? We go, go, go and never really allow ourselves to actually be at ease… whether we are on the go in the car; stuck in traffic,  grabbing a coffee, meeting up with friends, going to a meeting, working, cooking, cleaning, organizing, watching children, watching a moving, reading a book… in all these activities our mind is always active, thinking of the next thing that is going to be happening, analyzing the current situation, place, person or things and pre-planning our next move to the next event… is this just me, or do you as the reader deal with this as well?

God is telling us as His children that we are to “strive” to enter into his rest…? Does that sound like a contradictory statement? It simply means that we have to work at staying in His rest… meaning is clearly is not easy, but it is very important to do. Life gets busy and seems to fly by so fast… but think about it, it is because our lives tend to be so fast paced! We do not allow ourselves to slow down… to actually enjoy the moment or moments. Some of us get sick when we finally slow down, because our bodies go at such a fast pace that when we do take it down a notch our bodies are thrown out of balance… I understand the culture that we live in, but we need to take time to rest at the feet of Jesus and allow Him to fill our cup to over flowing, fill us with His love, joy and peace… when we are resting He is able to work in our lives, but when we are so busy working He is resting waiting for us to allow Him to move in our lives rather then us trying to make everything happen. Does this speak to any one’s heart?

Here is the definition of REST according to

1.the refreshing quiet or repose of sleep
2.refreshing ease or inactivity after exertion or labor
3.relief or freedom, especially from anything that wearies,troubles, or disturbs
4.a period or interval of inactivity, repose, solitude, or tranquility
5.mental or spiritual calm; tranquility
So how do we actually learn how to rest in the midst of this extremely busy world we live in today? I am by no means saying that we are not to work, or not to take care of our families… by no means am I. But I would say that we have to recognize that we are in need of actual rest.. not just a good night sleep, or lounging all day watching movies or what ever you do to wind down or relax. But, God is telling us that we need to strive to enter into His rest. But then in the next first He states that His Word is alive and active, sharper than any two edged sword… it is active, energizing and effective.. so what in the world does this mean? This is what I think it means; We receive true rest from the Lord, when we chose to take time to spend with Him and speak His word over us, because His Word is alive, active, energizing and effective… and if we are to speak His Word over our lives we are declaring that we are receiving from Him all that we need. It does take effort to make time to spend with the Lord and rest in His presence, but it is worth every minute. As the Psalmist states: better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere…

Father I am so great full for your presence. I am so thankful that I can come boldly to the throne room of grace to receive from YOU all that I am in need of. I ask that you would teach us to honestly and truly strive and protect resting in your presence… I ask that you would open the eyes of our hearts and give us revelation light into this very important topic that we seem to so easily neglect. We all desire rest and refuge, but so many of us seek it elsewhere… nothing else can satisfy, refresh, rebuild and strengthen… I ask God that we would be able to renew our mind with your Word and trust that when we declare  Your Word over our lives you are working… Lord we cannot figure out everything with our understanding or experience, so rather than us striving to make things happen in our natural ability ( working) teach us to rest adn allow you to work your Word in our lives… I am asking that you would help us to lay everything down and then leave it, not choose to pick it back up. Thank you father for your promise of receiving from you all that we need and for teaching us to rest. I  thank you for these things right now, in the name of Jesus… so be it! Amen!
