Scripture: 1 Corinthians 14:14-15
14″For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit by the Holy Spirit within me prays, but my mind is unproductive, it bears no fruit and helps nobody.
15Then what am I to do? I will pray with my spirit by the Holy Spirit that is within me, but I will also pray intelligently with my mind and understanding; I will sing with my spirit by the Holy Spirit that is within me, but I will sing intelligently with my mind and understanding also.”
We as people can only pray “so much” as our understanding is limited and so is our vocabulary. But our God, the author and finisher of our faith, the one who knows the beginning from the end, who knows all things, who has all wisdom and all understanding has given us an avenue in which to pray in an even more effective and powerful way. This avenue supersedes our own ability to pray in our own natural mind and with our own natural words. Paul is writing in this scripture explaining the purpose of the promised Holy Spirit. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He told the disciples to wait on departing from Jerusalem for the promise of the Holy Spirit. Jesus on the earth could only be in one place at one time, but after he would ascend into heaven, He would send the Holy Spirit to dwell in us as believers to do the works of Christ. To be His hands, feet and mouth piece all through out the world by declaring and demonstrating the love and power of God. So why is this promise of the holy Spirit so important? The bible says that we are built up, strengthened, edified as believers when we pray in the Holy Spirit!Who needs this? We all do! The bible also says that we pray in the holy Spirit we are praying out the perfect will of God on earth, we pray out mysteries… the things that we do not know, things that are beyond our own understanding and our knowledge… So what does it mean to pray in the Holy Spirit? Does it mean that we sit back and let the Holy Spirit open up our mouth and pray…no… we do the praying, but we yield to the Spirit of the living God who dwells on the inside of us to give us the words to pray. It will not sound like English or your native tongue. The first several time you pray in the Holy Spirit you mind is questioning ” what in the world is this… is this right?” But your mind will not comprehend it, because it is not something that naturally happens, it is a supernatural gift from God for all people who want to receive the gift from Him. Just as salvation is a FREE gift for all mankind, it is a choice for all mankind to receive the gift of salvation, what Jesus did on the cross to redeem us back to God. To receive the gift of the Holy Spirit you first must be born again and have received Jesus as your Lord and savior… meaning that you believe in your heart and have confessed with your mouth that Jesus is the son of God, that he died on the cross for your sins, that He rose from the dead and that he lives today. After you have received Jesus as your Lord and savior you are “qualified” to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Meaning you can ask the Lord to baptize you with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. It is His free gift for all believers, not just some! God desires all of us who are born again to receive all that He has for us. We will never know all the things of God… but we can always go deeper and get to know more of God… so if you want to go deeper and you have never received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, now you know how!!
As believers there should always be a hunger in us to go deeper in the things of the Lord. To not stay comfortable with our current knowledge of the Word of God, and current experiences. If you have never received the gift of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues… know that it is a biblical promise for you to experience your relationship with the Lord in a greater and deeper way. Praying in other tongues is exciting and fun. As described in the previous paragraph there are many reasons why praying in other tongues in so important! So, if you would like to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit it is simple! Just like when you got born again, you believed by faith in your heart and confessed with your mouth to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior.. you did not get born again by any works of your own… receiving this gift from God is simple. You simply say a prayer asking Him.
Repeat this out load and after you are finished just begin to thank the Lord for His gift for you! “Father in the name of Jesus, I thank you that you give good gifts to your children and the gift of being baptized with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues is a good gift from you. I am asking you by faith for you to fill me up with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues, I receive right now in the name of Jesus. Amen.”
Father I ask that you would help us as your children to see the benefit in our lives of praying in the Holy Spirit. That as we pray out your purpose for our lives, mysteries, and receive strength, joy, and walk in a greater understanding of who you are and who we are in you we would begin to operate in a greater boldness to be even more effective for the kingdom of God! I ask and prayer these things, in the name of Jesus! Amen… so be it!
