18The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon Me, because He has anointed Me [the Anointed One, the Messiah] to preach the good news (the Gospel) to the poor; He has sent Me to announce release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth as delivered those who are oppressed [who are downtrodden, bruised, crushed, and broken down by calamity],
19To proclaim the accepted and acceptable year of the Lord [the day [l]when salvation and the free favors of God profusely abound.
20Then He rolled up the book and gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were gazing [attentively] at Him.
21And He began to speak to them: Today this Scripture has been fulfilled [m]while you are present and hearing.
In the first portion of Luke Jesus went away into the desert for a 40 day fast. He did this because He was being led by the Holy Spirit to do so. The purpose of a fast is to get ourselves out of the way and to discipline our flesh so we are not motivated by our physical and emotional desires, but led by the Spirit of the living God to successfully take the next step. The next step for Jesus was to begin His earthly ministry and when He was confident that the time was now, the enemy came in like a flood (Isaiah 59:19) Jesus spoke out of His mouth the word of God and declared the truth. He knew who he was, He was confident in His identity…the tactic that the enemy tried to use to cause him to not walk out His destiny, Jesus returned right back to him to fulfill the Word of the Lord.
Jesus knew who He was and what His purpose upon the earth was for and He did not take it lightly. He knew he was anointed to preach the good news, release the captives, heal the sick and redeem mankind back to God. He could confidently say “Today this scripture has been fulfilled” He knew what was to come, the lives that were going to be forever changed by his obedience to walk in the authority of the Word of God.
It is clear that Jesus had to take some time away to prepare Himself for all that the Lord had for Him, for his three years of earthly ministry. He needed to be secure and confident in His identity. The amazing thing about this scripture is that we are called to do the works of Christ – preach the gospel, heal the sick, raise the dead… go to the ends of the earth….because Jesus is, I am and I now do! The enemy will try to distort our view of what God is calling the church as a whole and as individuals to do and how to go about doing it. Jesus received a strategy from the Holy Spirit to walk out… so lets spend time in the presence of the Lord to not only “know scripture, or have head knowledge” but to get it in our heart and when the enemy comes in like a food, we speak out of our mouth the word of the living God that causes us to walk in faith to walk out who we are in Him!!
Father I thank you that the Spirit of the living God lives in me, that same Spirit that led Jesus into the desert for a 40 day fast, the same spirit that anointed Him and that same Spirit that raised Him up from the dead lives in me. Father I know your voice, your voice is more real to me than my own voice, it is more real to me than my emotions, more real to me than my own thoughts, more real to me than the air that I breath. Father I know you and I know that I can walk out what you have called me to do, because you have anointed and equipped me just as you anointed and equipped Jesus. When the enemy tries to come in like a flood and have me question who I am, what belongs to me and what I am called to do, I thank you that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks… I will speak your word with boldness and confidence and remind myself of who I belong to and who I am in YOU!!!
